I II I (Один два один) - A Radical Reading Room was first intended as an intimate exhibition format for artist books that would be hosted in a private apartment in Kyiv (located in Konovaltsia, 44a, apt 121). Yet, due to the dangers and hardships caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the first iteration of the project happened in the safe and cozy space of WIRWIR in Berlin. The current circumstances also defined this year’s topic: empire, exile, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and forms of resistance.
We would like to think of the project as a more intimate and durational model that gives time and space to spend time with the publications and appreciate them in a contextualized environment with a radical idea of hosting that involves the resident of the apartment as caretaker of the project.
Continuing with the private hosting session there where intimate moments of drinking ukrainian herbal tea together (chaina tseremoniya), readings, performances, movie screenings and artworks that responded to the collection of artist books.
We consider this project in exile as a nomadic setting until the project can relocate to its original destination.
The books are curated by a variety of artists, researchers, curators and friends with different backgrounds and perspectives as well as random discoveries.
