Silence Recordings, Vol. 1-5
Sound installation 5 recordings
5 min each / looped
From 2013 to 2017, Stefan Klein took several trips around the world to the most remote and noiseless places known to mankind to record pure silence.
From the Changtang Region, Tibet , to the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, Botswana; Negev Desert, Israel; El corregimiento del chinchorro, Bolivia, and Oimjakon, Russia – these field recordings represent the full spectrum of complete silence.
To hear silence, silence must be given.
It is an irredeemable promise. It is an absurd situation: The only moment when it is actually possible to hear the full silence that is recorded during a 4-year period and played back in the exhibition space is in a space where there is already complete silence.
But which silence are you hearing then? A promise that will never be redeemed.
